One of the most common questions I encounter from novice gamblers is whether sports’ betting is an Art or a Science? In reality, the question is: Do you have to be skilled or lucky to be a successful handicapper? Next time you go make a bet or enter a pool sheet, ask yourself this question: why do I like this pick? Once you’ve come to a reason on why you like the Bears +3.0 over the Redskins, then ask yourself how did I come up with this pick? Was it intuition? Number analysis? What exact formula did you use to come up with your selection?

Ah yes, the head scratching begins! Did I throw a dart at the result board or was it the five hours of crunching numbers into my excel sheet to come up with the Bears +3.0. To quote AJ Friedman from his book FOOTBALL PICKING WINNERS AGAINST THE SPREAD 'Sports handicapping is Treated as an Art, handicapping leaves too much to one's judgment --you may have a lot of information, what you need is EVIDENCE! And handicapping science is based on 'The principle of what has actually happened vs. one's expectations of how things should be!'

Do you agree? I partially agree with AJ Friedman’s point of view. Whenever you’re dealing with numbers and betting into a number set by an oddsmaker, isn’t that some type of scientific proof or formula? When you do your own numbers and compare them to the bookmaker’s numbers, who’s to say that your numbers couldn’t be used as the line for any given game? Ultimately, the key is to determine whether the oddsmaker use art or science to come up with the betting line for the game.

Since my picks are based on a formula that combines a variety of factors, some mathematically verifiable and some based on common sense, I believe that sports handicapping is 60% science and 40% art. A successful handicapper cannot solely rely on statistics nor can he solely rely on system trends and general knowledge involving some type of behavioral and situational analysis to make a reliable recommendation.

Here’s an example of analyzing a system trend: if the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights and have scored 2 goals FOR in their last 5 games, one would assume we have a fatigue team on our hands. Is this rocket science to figure out the Leafs are tired and victims of bad scheduling? No it’s called doing your homework!

Thomas A. Edison one of my favorite inspirations in life once said; “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework.' Simply said, hard work and doing your due diligence using a “trial and error” practice to master your craft will reap you beneficial rewards in the future.
